First, we want to make sure you’re doing what you can to help reduce the damage to your home. If your emergency is because fresh water is spraying into or flooding your home, you’ll need to turn off the water as soon as possible. Take a look at where the water is coming from. If it’s coming from a supply line, the water heater, dishwasher, or washing machine, you may be able to stop the water flow by turning off the valve to the supply line.
However, if the leak is coming from a main water line or you can’t find the source of the water, you’ll need to turn the water supply off to your entire home. If you’re on city water, you can find instructions here.
Many of our Boerne clients have water supplied to their homes from a personal well. If you have a well, you can find instructions here.

Reducing Water Damage
Turn Off Water for Homes on City Water
- Locate the home shutoff valve and turn it off. For most homes there will be a shutoff valve you can adjust without any tools. However, some older homes may require a plumbing key to turn off the water. It’s a good idea to always locate the shutoff valve when you move into a new home.
- Release the pressure on your plumbing system by opening outdoor spigots and faucets inside the home so that water can exit the home through the drain lines rather than the leaking pipe.
- Give us a call and we’ll get our plumbers near you over to your home to take care of the problem as soon as possible.
- Snap a couple of photos of the water leak and its path through the home. Then, mop up any water to prevent damage to your flooring or walls. You may want to utilize a fan to begin drying the area as well.

Reducing Water Damage

Many homes in Kendall Country, Bulverde, and other parts of the Texas Hill Country get their water from a private well on the property. If your home has well water, you can stop the flow of leaking water by turning off electricity to the well and any supplementary booster pumps.
- Turn off the breaker to the well pump and additional booster pumps.

Evaluating the Problem
Is This A Plumbing Emergency?
When you’re surprised by a water leak at 2:00 in the morning, it may be difficult to assess if it is a plumbing emergency. The first step in recognizing an emergency is deciding “Can I stop the leak?” If you can stop the leak by turning off either an appliance or faucet shut-off valve or by turning off the home’s main shutoff, you may be able to wait until morning to have a repair made. You can contact us online or call to let us know an emergency that occurred and needs to be repaired in the morning.
However, some plumbing emergencies just can’t wait. If you have sewage backing up into the home or can’t turn off the flooding water, immediate action is needed. So, give us a call right away.
