What is the difference between an indoor faucet and an outdoor faucet?

The main difference between outdoor spigots and indoor faucets is that most outdoor faucets do not have temperature controls.  They also have finishes that are designed for the harsher outdoor conditions.

7 Common Outdoor Faucets

Hose Bib Faucet

A hose bib is the most common outdoor spigot. The compression valve is located beneath the spigot handle allowing for a garden hose attachment. Because the spigot handle is exposed to the elements, it is important to remove your garden hose when the weather turns cold and to protect your hose bib with a cold weather covering or faucet cap.

Frost Proof Faucet

A sill faucet is a type of frost-proof faucet. The water pipe is fitted inside the wall of your home and protected from the elements. You don’t have to worry about water freezing in the pipes and causing damage. The faucet handle fits snugly against the outside wall. Like the hose bib, you can attach a garden hose.

Ball Valve Faucets

A ball valve faucet has a small ball in the middle of the spigot that acts to block the opening when you turn the handle on. As a result, the water opening is slow. These spigots are often used in landscaping lines and as shut-off valves for your plumbing systems.

Anti-Siphon Faucets

Anti-siphon faucets have an anti-backflow mechanism to protect your drinking water from possible contamination. This outdoor spigot is recommended for safe use with chemical and pesticide sprayers.

Yard Hydrants

Unlike other types of faucets, a yard hydrant is connected to an underground water supply. The underground pipes are insulated from the elements and withstand freezing temperatures. These are often used in lawn sprinkler systems.

Outdoor Kitchen Faucets

If your next home renovation project is an outdoor kitchen, you’ll want an outdoor kitchen faucet. Unlike most outdoor faucets, kitchen faucets provide hot and cold water and are generally safe for drinking water.  To have hot water, gas lines and a gas water heater (or an electric water heater) would need to be installed or the water line would need to tie into the home’s primary water heater.

Outdoor Showers

If an outdoor shower is on your list of renovations, we also install outdoor shower faucets.  You may want an outdoor shower if you have a recreation area that includes a hot tub/spa or a sanded court.  For a comfortable shower, the shower would need hot water from a tankless water heater or from the home’s primary water heater.

Hosebib FAQ's

Additions and Remodels

What type of outdoor water faucet is best?

When considering your options, we recommend frost-free outdoor spigots made of stainless steel. Stainless steel has 7 times more frost protection than brass.

How long do outdoor spigots last?

Most standard spigots last 10-20 years.

Why is my hose bib leaking?

Outdoor spigots provide an easy way to access water outside your home. But they don’t last forever. Exposure to the elements causes your faucet to wear down and malfunction over time. A dripping hose bib or a faucet that has cracks is costing you money. Call us for an honest assessment. We’ll repair your leaking faucet. If you need a replacement, we’ll advise you on your best outdoor faucet options.

Can I move an existing spigot?

Replacing a worn spigot is an easy job. Moving an existing spigot or adding another spigot is more difficult. You will need an experienced plumber to locate and tap into an existing water line. This may require digging a trench from your existing water line to the new location and installing another water pipe to connect to your new spigot.

Why is an outdoor spigot used for water pressure testing?

Testing the water pressure of your home requires using a pressure gauge that attaches like a water hose.  Outdoor spigots or hosebibs make it easy to use these devices.

Should I cover my outdoor water faucets in the winter?

Yes, it is recommended to cover your outdoor faucets. Even frost-free spigots are not completely frost-proof in extreme cold weather.

Winterizing Outdoor Spigots

When outdoor temperatures reach 30 degrees or lower, pipes can freeze. Follow these easy steps to protect your pipes and outdoor faucets:

  • Make sure the faucet is completely off and, if applicable, turn off the interior shut-off valve to your outside water supply.
  • Disconnect and put away your hoses until Spring.
  • Make sure to drain all water from your spigots.
  • Cover your spigots with faucet caps.
