Common Causes of Clogs
Why is my sink backing up?
A clogged drain is likely the answer. It’s the most common household plumbing problem. Just think of all the “stuff’ that goes down your drain. Food, fats, oils, grease, and hair to name a few. A clogged drain and water backing up in your sink can lead to foul odors and mold and mildew. With routine drain cleaning you help to eliminate the likelihood of a drain backing up into your home.

Steps to Using a Sink Plunger
How do I unclog my sink drain?
We recommend keeping a plunger handy to successfully unclog your sink most of the time. There are two types of plungers: sink plungers and toilet plungers. Sink plungers are a half sphere with a flat bottom. Toilet plungers hare a sphere with an extended flange. Both of these useful tools are known as a plumber’s friend.
How to Correctly use a Sink Plunger
- Position it over the sink drain.
- Make sure to cover the drain opening completely.
- If you have a double sink, make sure to cover the drain on the opposite side with a stopper or rag.
- Fill the sink with just enough water to cover the cup of the plunger. This will help to create a tight seal.
- Plunge using quick up and down movements to loosen the clog.
- Check to see if the clog is cleared and the water flows freely.
- If the clog is not clear, repeat filling the sink with water and plunging the water out.
If your sink is still draining slowly after using the plunger, you may need to call in a plumber to determine the cause of the problem and snake the line.

Clogged p-traps Prevent Drainage
Why is my water still draining so slowly?
If you have cleared your clogged drain and your water continues to drain slowly, the issue may be in your sink’s drain trap or the trap arm.
Removing and Clearing p-trap
How do I clear the drain trap?
Anything can get stuck in the drain trap. Hairbands, coins, toothpaste caps, and small toys. To disconnect the sink trap, look under the sink and unscrew the two nuts that hold the trap in place. Pull the trap straight down and remove it. We recommend placing a container under the sink drain to catch the water that spills when you remove the trap. If an object in the trap is causing the clog, removing it should clear the drain.
What to Do In An Emergency
What else can I try if Clearing p-trap Didn't work?
If nothing was found to be obstructing the water flow in the drain trap, the next step is to check the trap arm. The trap arm is located under the sink, in the back, towards the wall. It is generally fastened with a nut.
Simply loosen the nut and pull the trap arm straight out from the wall. Now you should be able to see right into the drain and remove any objects that may be trapped inside.

Professionals have specialized equipment
Do I need a plumber to snake my drain?
If all attempts to remove the clog and clear your drain fail, you may have to snake your drain. After the drain trap and the trap arm have been removed, you can access the drainpipe with a drain snake. Insert the snake cable into the drain and feed it into the drainpipe as far as it will go. The snake should clear the clog.
Once you put everything back together, run the water to see if the blockage is cleared. If the drain still isn’t cleared or if you are not the DIY type, it’s time to call our highly skilled plumbers at Olde Town Plumbing. We have the specialized equipment to get the job done right. And our plumbers have the know-how when it comes to fixing all your sink plumbing issues.
Homemade Drain Cleaner
Should I use a chemical drain cleaner?
Chemical drain cleaners can be dangerous. We don’t recommend using them.
- They can cause your metal pipes to corrode.
- They can melt different types of plastic pipes.
- They pose a safety hazard to anyone working under the sink to clear the clog.
A homemade drain cleaner is safer to use. You can make your own eco-friendly drain cleaner with a mixture of vinegar and baking soda and boiling water.
Homemade Drain Cleaner Procedure
- Remove as much water as you can from the sink.
- Pour a potful of boiling water down the drain.
- Pour ½ cup of baking soda and ½ cup of vinegar down the drain.
- Cover the drain to force the mixture downward.
- The baking soda and the vinegar will start to bubble and fizz.
- Wait 10 minutes.
- Pour another pot of boiling water down the drain.
- Flush the drain with hot water from the faucet to remove any leftover build-up.

If a plunger or homemade drain cleaner doesn’t solve the problem, call Olde Town Plumbing to schedule an inspection. You may need to have your drain professionally cleaned to fully scour the build-up and clear the drain.
Kitchen disposal may cause sink clog
Can my garbage disposal cause a clogged drain?
Yes, kitchen disposals can may form clogs. In fact, a leading cause of a clogged drain is waste build-up in the drain line from the garbage disposal.
Also, if you are not using enough water to clear the waste in the disposal, the drain line can become clogged.
The professionals at Olde Town Plumbing can clear the drain line and get the water flowing properly again. Or we can install a new food disposal if your current one is broken. You’ll be back in business in no time.
