How a Toilet Works Properly

Toilet Construction and Function

The construction and function of a toilet are basic. You have the bowl, the tank, and a flushing mechanism.

  • When you push the handle, a chain lifts the flapper inside the tank which opens the flush valve.
  • Water flows from the tank through the flush valve into the bowl.
  • Water from the tank forces waste down through the trap and into the main drain.
  • Once the tank is empty, the flapper valve closes and the tank refills with water.
  • When the tank is full, a float mechanism triggers the flow of water to turn off.

When your toilet isn’t working right, it can be because any one of these mechanisms is no longer performing the way it should.

Toilet Issues We Solve

4 Common Toilet Plumbing Problems

1. Toilet not flushing

Why is the toilet not flushing? There are several possible reasons why your toilet isn’t flushing or is only partially flushing.

  • The water level in the tank may be set too low and needs adjusting.
  • Your flush handle may be too loose or too tight.
  • Your flush lever lift arm may need adjustment or replacement.
  • The lift chain has too much slack or has become tangled.
  • The flapper sealing the flush valve opening is damaged.
  • A clog in the main drain.

You may be able to resolve some issues yourself. Adjusting the water level, flush handle, or lift chain may be all it takes. If you need help replacing your flushing mechanisms, Olde Town plumbing is here to help. No job is too big or too small.

We guarantee quality workmanship and 100% customer satisfaction.

2. Toilet Won’t Stop Running

The sound of a constantly running toilet is annoying. And it’s also expensive. Water constantly flowing into the tank through the fill valve wastes water and costs money.

It may be as simple as a toilet handle stuck in the down position, allowing the toilet to run constantly. Make sure the handle mounting inside the tank is not too tight.

If that doesn’t do the trick, the problem is usually in the fill tank. The water level in the tank is dropping because the flapper is not sealing the flush valve opening. This allows water from the tank to continually leak into the bowl. As the water level in the tank goes down, the toilet will continue to run to keep the tank filled.

Replacing the flapper or the entire flush valve may be necessary to solve the problem.

3. Clogged Toilet

Too often we are guilty of flushing non-flushable items or simply flushing too much toilet paper down the toilet at once.  Either of these can cause a clogged toilet.

So, how do you fix a clogged toilet?

If you have a clogged toilet, the first thing to do is reach for the plunger. Plunging will force water through the trap to move the clog along. A toilet auger or snake is another option.

Remember to turn off the water supply to prevent the toilet from overflowing as you try to unclog the toilet.

If the plunger doesn’t do the trick, you can try pouring a gallon of hot water into the toilet followed by 1 cup of baking soda and 2 cups of white vinegar. Wait 15 minutes and flush the toilet with another gallon of hot water.

If your toilet continues to clog, you may have something stuck in the toilet trap or toilet vent. Or there may be underlying problems with your plumbing pipes.

For example, the build-up of mineral deposits from hard water in your plumbing pipes will restrict the flow of water leading to more clogs.

It’s time to call in the experts at Olde Town Plumbing. We have the tools needed to get the job done right. We’ll listen to you, inspect the problem, and offer the best solution possible.

4. Toilet Leaks

A leaky toilet is a common plumbing problem. If your toilet is leaking, don’t delay. Water can quickly damage your flooring.

One of our highly skilled plumbers will diagnose the source of the leak. We’ll inspect the water supply valve and the water supply line to make sure everything is connected properly. We’ll replace any parts that are damaged.

We’ll make sure your toilet is properly fastened to the floor.

We’ll check for cracks in the tank. If the bowl or tank is cracked, we recommend replacing the toilet. We offer you the option of purchasing a toilet from a local retailer or having us bring a name-brand toilet to you for easy installation.
